Addons: Little Helpers

Today’s post is dedicated to little sweet addons, intended to make your life in WoW easier or make your UI look prettier. I plan on take a closer look at some of the bigger addons or “addon-categories” soon, like Unitframes, Action Bars and the likes. But to start out writing about UIs and Addons again, I think presenting small, little helpers might not be such a bad idea.

Special credits, love and many thanks go to Tekkub and haste. Talking about small useful addons without mentioning them would be like blasphemy.

Cave: Even if all those addons are extremely small and not memory hungry, they still use a tiny amount of your computers performance. Try to clean out addons you don’t really use from time to time. Every addon you install has the potential to slow your performance down or conflict with another addon. Use as many addons as needed but as few as possible. This counts especially for little sweet helpers.

In alphabetical order:

Action Bar Saver 2: I wanted to try this one out for ever, so I did test it when switching from elemental back to resto next week. Works like a charm, All Actionbars were restored correct including macros.

Align: If my UI is symmetric, this has a very calming effect on me. If you are a crazy person like me, this addon will help you align your addons by laying a grid over your screen with /align.

Auctionator: Very small AH addon. I use it for selling, especially selling multiple items with one click. I often have tons of buff food in my bags, if I want to sell them in stack of fives, I just drag 5 into the auctionator window and set the amount of stacks I want to sell and auctionator will do the rest for me, even calculating an appropriate price.

BadBoy: Blocks all gold spam and reports the BadBoys.

Butsu: Very sweet looking replacement of the loot frame. Will open at mousetip if that is checked in your WoW options or at whatever else position you choose (hold down ALT for dragging). Why would you need that? Because it looks pretty.

Pro Tip:

keep an eye open for Shantalyas sAddons:

  • sThreatmeter2 (with GUI)
  • the rest might need basic .lua knowledge
  • for a link scroll to sAddons

Chicchai: This addon will minimize your chat frame after a few seconds, and maximize on mouseover and/or specified events. If you aim for an UI with very few clutter, this might help you see more of the actually pretty nice looking world of WoW.

ControlFreak: If you have many alts and don’t want to set up macros for every CC spells in the game, here’s your solution. Control Freak adds a little frame, that will Focus your target on click, cast the CC spell on next click and recast your CC spell no matter what target you have selected, CC spell duration is shown as well.

Cork: Reminds you of buffing your self, keep a shout up as warrior and buff your group member and does all that with one click. Alerts you if your armor is low on durability in cities only. Alternatively you can use AnnoyingBuffReminder, which has a bigger warning frame but no buffing funtionality.

Doom CooldownPulse: Whenever an ability comes off cooldown, a little (or big) icon will flash in the middle of your screen. Very useful if you don’t want to stare at the cooldown numbers on your actionbars all the time.

DoubleWide and DoubleWideTradeskills: Questlog and Tradeskill Window are extended to side-by-side windows, so browsing through them is much easier.

Fane: In case you didn’t know: You can creat chat tabs in your Chatframe1. Creating a tab for all your whispers is very convenient. Or one for all the guild chatter is useful as well. Do you want those tabs to not only be useful but very good looking? Get Fane.

Fishing Ace!: If fishing pole is equipped, you can fish with double right-click.

FriendsWithBenefits: My friends list always grows and grows, you start adding folks, you add their alts. And if you’re as passionate as me with playing alts, synchronizing the friends list can be annoying. This little guy does it all for you, you add a friend, it will be added to every friends list of every toon, if you delete someone, FriendsWithBenefits will do that on all your alts lists for you.

HatTrick: Adds a checkbox to your character frame to toggle Helm and Cloak. There are just too much ugly helms out there to ignore this addon.

OGlow: Every item will get a border representing its quality, be it in your bags or in your character frame. Helps when looking for items in your bag that should be sold or disenchanted. Also helps when inspecting other players, you’ll see if they wear green crap or are true epic heroes at a glance.

OpenAll: You want to empty your mailbox with just one click or take all the cash with a single click? Here you go.

pError: Lets you filter out annoying error messages. Because I know I haven’t got enough rage but I like mashing buttons.

NeonChat: This addon will color the borders of your chat frame and the box where you type stuff in the color in the color of the channel you’re going to send that message to. If you ever had to write “LOLZ sry guys FC!!”, get this please. If you still send to the wrong channel after getting this addon you might be color blind or dumb.

sAddons: Very decent looking addons for many different purposes. Often updated. sThreatmeter2 is a fantastic alternative if you don’t like the looks of omen. I hope there are many more sAddons to come.

SellFish: The selling price of items will be shown in the tooltip of every item.

StealYourCarbon: You play a rogue and are annoyed of restocking your poisons through clicking? You always forget to buy stack of candles for PW:F? StealYourCarbon restocks it all automatically from vendors or bank.

tekability: Durability for displayed in your character window on every item.

tekJunkSeller: Sells all grey items to a vendor whenever you talk to one.

teksLoot: Replaces the ugly Lootroll window with this stripped down Version of XLoot. Makes looting epics even more fun!

Trade Tabs: Adds nice tabs to your tradeskill windows, easy switching between all your professions guaranteed.

VendorBait: Highlights the quest reward that will vendor for the highest price.

That’s it for now. But hey, something is missing? Just tell me in the comments and I’ll add it if it isn’t total crap, maybe even then.

Hey these looks pretty good, just grabbed a couple of them. Just thought you might want to also mention the critically important addon managers. I use WowMatrix, but I think Curse.com also has one.

From Past Experience, WowMatrix is amazing, and Curse gives you viruses.

Surfed via a link from WoWInsider. To those who mentioned WoWMatrix, I have a bit a newsflash for you (though likely you don’t care): Both the AddOns authors and the UI sites that host their Addon files HATE WoWMatrix. Seriously, AddOn authors have request that WoWMatrix remove their AddOns from the download list yet WM typically has not complied. In addition WM eats bandwidth from the UI sites (such as Curse, WoWInterface and UI.WorldofWar), bandwidth costs money. While other updaters also use bandwidth from the UI sites, the WM client constantally pings the UI sites. One UI site has compared WM’s pinging to a DDoS attack, that is how much bandwidth WM is using.

In regards to viruses coming from Curse, that was not an issue on Curse’s part, rather it was a banner ad from Curse’s ad provider. All of the UI sites have had this issue and have taken issue with their ad providers. Nor are the UI sites the only ones with these issues.

In regards to many of the Addon listed in this blog posting, I have used many of them and they get my vote. These AddOns do what they say the will do and nothing more. They don’t use much in the way of RAM (not that big of an issue unless you are using a marginal system) nor do they use much in way of CPU (a much bigger issue especially in when you are the middle of a 25 man Naxx AoE-fest or a Wintergrasp zerg). These all use the KISS principle which is a big plus in my book.

lol @ pError … I don’t have enough mana but if I keep mashing buttons I’m pretty sure magic happens … eventually. The speed at which it happens scales inversely with panic.
