Elemental Basics

thunderstormWe’re Shamans and we’re hybrids. This makes dual spec a fantastic opportunity to collect gear for a second talent specialization and switch to a DPS role from time to time. In all honesty, I’d be perfectly happy with a second healing spec as well, and some times I look over at my fellow priests, who switch from holy to disc and back to holy, and this makes me a tiny bit jealous. But at this point there is really no need to use dual spec for two different healing specs, which I personally would find very cool (Something like investing 15 points in the elemental tree would make us strong single target healers and if we shift those 15 points to the enhancement tree, we could boost our group healing capabilities).

In BC I would go enhancement every second I could. It was good fun and I would often be the only enhancer in the raid and thus providing tons of important melee buffs. In my actual guild, the raid leader is enhancer and the whole guild is very melee heavy. So the obvious choice for my secondary spec was going elemental.

This post should summarize important points about playing elemental, gearing up and how to do some decent DPS with maybe not optimal gear.

The Spec

This should be the the best way to distribute your points. This leaves you with two optional points to finalize your spec. You could stick them into Improved Ghost Wolf for additional mobility, Improved Fire Nova Totem for controlling AoE packs or Convection if you feel that mana is an issue (which it shouldn’t be). Elemental Warding really helps you survive, I’d take it over 5/5 Convection in any case.

The Stats

Your first goal should be reaching the hit cap. This is at 368 (342 for Alliance. If you take raid debuffs into account (Misery or Improved Faerie Fire), the cap drops down to 289 (263 for Alliance), those buffs should really be available all the time if you raid heroic raid instances.

If you’re hit capped, it is SP and haste all the way. Stack it, gem for it, push it with flasks and buff food. Out of the two stats, SP is more solid. Haste is an excellent way to squeeze more LBs in between your LvBs. Just remember, that the amount of LBs you cast between two LvBs is not only not only influenced by haste, but by lag, reaction time and the nature of the encounter as well, so it’s not as easy to put a value on haste as you might think. Additional Information on haste can be found in the EJ – TTT entry.

Glyphs

The first two Glyphs are easy to Pick: Glyph of Flame Shock is absolutely required to keep up a tight rotation with as less FS refreshing as possible. Glyph of Lighting Bolt is a very solid damage increase, just by the fact that LB is the spell that will account for the biggest chunk of your damage. The last Glyph slot should go to Glyph of Totem of Wrath, which offers 84 SP. Glyph of Lava would be a better choice only at very high SP levels.

The Rotation

My elemental Rotation is based on priorities:

1. FS hast to be up all the time, no LvB should land on a target without FS

2. LvB

3. LB

Target dummies are really a nice way to practice your Rotation. Especially for resto shamans, who might not raid as elemental too often. If you want, you can add CL to your rotation as well. It does higher single target damage than LB at higher mana cost. Generally I would recommend to train really getting into the flow of the rotation without CL first, so you really squeeze as much LBs as possible into your rotation and don’t leave LvB off cooldown ever.

The Addons

There are two important things you have to watch: 1) is FS on the target? 2) When does LvB comes of the cooldown.

For debuff watching and trinket procs as well I use NeedToKnow. A bar is just the simplest way for me, to see when FS needs to be refreshed.

For cooldown management I just use the standart action bar with OmniCC, especially since OmniCC can show tenth of seconds. I’ll just create some 2-3 action buttons very close to my character, actionbar mods like Dominos can handle this easily.

A more and more prominent addon for handling cooldowns is EventHorizon.

Resto Gear

It is possible, that you just recently started to collect elemental gear. And getting of gear is a lot easier than it was in BC (Tier Gear for Emblems!), but still most of the time you will leave the good pieces to your caster DPS. So, don’t be afraid to wear Resto Gear or even Spirit. Often that healing piece with mp5 might still be a better pick than some blue item or an epic from a heroic instance. Band of Channeled Magic is a good example for a decent, cheap caster ring, not perfectly itemized for an elemental but still with very good stats. After all, it is still easier for us to get some decent off-gear, because we wear mail and don’t have to compete with all clothies out there.

    Nice overview.

Power Auras Classic addon is good for monitoring cooldowns, buffs and debuffs.

Elemental is also my dual spec, and I practised quite a bit on the heroic dummies I went from ~2400 dps to 3200dps just by keep practising, but since of my sketchy haste and circumstances I hardly ever match up the rotation that I try to achieve though. Flame Shock is off the target most of the time before I get my 2nd LVB in, and no doubt that’s costing me quite some DPS.

Did a Naxx25 heroic and during the entire run I had 2 misses total, but very unlucky those 2 misses were exactly on flame shock! AAH! Big DPS loss there. But the other Ele in the raid was doing a steady 600dps more then me and gear wise he had about 100SP more then what I had and a haste trinket proc (+500-ish), doesn’t seem something like that would increase DPS by so much, raid with 296hit ~2500SP, 410haste, 30%+ crit.

So hard to track down where the rotation goes wrong, since there is no mod that tells you if you are off the rotation or if you missed a key spell during it. But raid buffed I am “capped” at 3900DPS, during 5 hrs of pew-pew I could not get higher then that whereas the other shaman had no problem getting 4500+.

I tried the static rotation and the priority rotation and the 2nd one seems to favor better because of the situation where I cannot get a 2nd LVB in before FS wears off. So I just re-apply FS and do a CL since LVB is usually on cooldown still.

My current rotation where applicable: FS -> LvB -> LB until LvB is up, resume LB

After the 2nd 4th cast of LB (dont have the haste for 5) my FS is usually gone before LVB cooldown is back up. Dunno what the hell I am doing wrong here! :\

I’m really looking forward to getting more elemental raid time. Right now I’m just having fun seeing big numbers flying around and trying not to mess up my rotation (which I of course still do all the time).

My main problem is, I lack gear and just that caster attitude. I think I’d easily out-DPS my shaman with my crappy geared arms warrior, just because melee feels much more natural to me. But it’s a challenge and I’m willing to take it. It’s just annoying that I don’t get to raid Naxxramas anymore, so getting more caster gear is not too easy right now.

So elemental for me is still mainly gearing up and practicing. I hope I’ll be able to post more elemental related stuff at some time.

Seeing 22K+ LvB crits does get addicting ;-) (Thaddius FTW!). And doing quests with dual spec is a blast, I always neglected to finish quests because resto made it so tedious, and now I get every mob down with Flame Shock + LvB (easily 10K dmg) and if that fails to kill it, Chain Lightning after, BOOM, next!

Actually having more fun doing some quests again. Hell I even did some daileys! But the big downside is getting killed pretty quickly in PvP whereas Resto would keep you alive often long enough for them to give up or for you to run away :D

Personally, I enjoy the change of pace. The real trick is collecting enough stuff to get hitcapped without gimping yourself; once you can do that, it’s joyous.

I did a VoA-10 run this last week, tank healing on Emalon and topped the meter (which was only important because the Priest / Raid lead was kind of dismissive about myself and the Resto Druid, for some reason, and I wanted to show him up).

On to Archevon, where there is no sane reason for 3 healers, and I flipped to Ele – and topped the DPS chart by over 200. Being able to dominate in separate fields like that really makes a player feel valuable!

It’s also great for Flame Leviathan, go Ele + get shot up to turret duty – you can heal yourself if it’s bad, and nuke the bejeezus out of the turrets like nobody’s business; swapping specs helps for balancing DPS on the trash pulls between Kologarn and Auriaya, too.

So yeah, I really, really like my duality. :)

Yeah elemental shamans are really good for nuking turrets. I got to do that while we were doing Flame Leviathan +3 Towers yesterday. That was pretty good fun actually.

While you were fighting turrets, did you ever get an exit-vehicle button? The other three guys always went to parachute and were in the air forever while I could just easily jump down.

I just need better gear so badly. I’m in a raid full of excellent casters with top notch gear and I still have some evil resto pieces in my elemental set.

      • 2009 May 28

Yeah I am lacking some haste to knock in that extra LB between LvB cooldowns and it’s pretty hard to obtain that without loosing too much of the other nice goodies on the gear set I currently have. I might actually buy that 40badge cloth belt to fill up the hit since other sources of +hit are pretty rare at the moment. Tried to get the +hit ring from NAX10 but always got either outrolled or was healing so hard to get something before mainspec. Rings with +hit are the rarest of them all!

Good luck on getting more gear drug, I was fortunate to collect full T7.5 + most BiS offset pieces (except weapon rings and trinkets) before we decided to stop running Naxx all togtheter, and it really sucks to do pugs for that 1 piece of loot cause in pugs there is ALWAYS people that need gear. And swear by their grandmothers grave they NEED it, greed ;-)

so I was on ptr and I decided to stack some hit gems to get up close to hit cap and of course i was made fun of for it, and im not sure why, this guy tried to show me up with haste gems and he did the same dps as me with the same rotation yet i didnt have glyphs on yet so really who was right? we both pulled 4k on the raid boss dummy and he proceeded to tell me I suck ridiculously bad so I’m confused, I figured since I wasnt going to raid so the druid and spriest hit buffs wouldnt apply hit would have been a better choice, or should i have gone with haste or more sp?

good pointers overall for fresh shammys, but when i hit 80 i didnt use Glyph of Totem of Wrath, i went start to Glyph of Lava . besides that i waould say for a rotation have lightning bolt first, and u forgot to add chain lightning into ur rotation, but i got lightning bolt chain lightning lava burst then flame hsock. because i go backwards with FS,LvB,CL,and the LB,thenCL again then LvB and refresh flameshock, andLBaway, but anyways yea its pretty swee being able to hit 4.5k dps and then switching to heals and MTheals and raid heals. shamans are one of the most under rated class that i can see. well on my server it use to be like for every 100 horde u would have one shammy. good for me thou =)
but look me up if u want. and yea it is hard to get hit now, all the mail gear from uld has Mp5 on it, hope they fix that cause i need hit, not mp5.
