MMOUI Minion BETA
I have to admit it. I was a real update-Junkie in the good old days of WAU. I’d hit the update button pretty much every time before logging into WoW. When WoWAce had to shut down its updater, I went back to manually updating. And in fact, it has me left with a lot more control over my addons. I use the “My Favorites” function of WoWInterface and will check it from time to time. I read the change log of addons and only update if it’s really needed. In a lot of addons I use, I have changed some lines of .lua, so those I will only update if their absolutely broken.
Nonetheless, I still like the principle of a working addon updater. I even used WoWMatrix for a short time, dropped it pretty quickly though, when I realized it wasn’t community friendly at all. I tried out the curse client, sadly it was missing a lot of WoWInterface addons.
So I’m more than happy, that the guys from WoWInterface finally put out the BETA of their own addon updater, MMOUI Minion.
If you want to try this program:
- Backup all your addon files as well as your WTF folder.
- Be aware that this is BETA software, it won’t work perfectly. Or to quote Tekkub: “The minion is BETA! Make sure you back up your addon folder before you proceed. There is a chance it could install old addons or just overwrite your entire folder with porn. While that’s unlikely, be sure you back up just in case.”
- Set all addons, which are updated frequently on WoWAce/Curse but have some old version on WoWInterface to “Ignore permanently”, or the MMOUI Minion will overwrite your addon with an outdated version.
Before I ran the updater, I set a lot of addons to be ignored. Then it actually ran pretty smooth. The only strange thing: it installed Ace2, which I haven’t used in ages. And it didn’t recognize an addon hosted on WoWInterface, Broker_Equipment.
All in all, this looks extremly promising. The updater is kept simple and mainly for just that one klick to rule update them all. I like that, because there are is a good bunch of addons I want to update frequently like BigWigs (obvious), Skada Damage Meter or just about any newer addon that gets frequent updates.
The only thing I’m a little bit sad about, is that it might never work with addons from WoWAce. WoWAce is now a part of curse. The main feature of the curse premium client is the ability to update all addons with one click. So I just can’t imagine curse will ever write a module for the MMOUI Minion. Other sites like WOWUI have shown interest in working on a module to integrate into the Minion.

Hi, I just tried the new addon updater. Works really fine. Thank you for your adwise for installing it. The Beta runs very good for a Beta Version.
I just tried this out, something which I kinda regret.
Admittedly I did backup my addons before touching this, but after updating -all- of my addons I ended up with about 10 new ones that I never asked for.
So, yeah. If you’re intending of using it, make sure you backup your stuff and disable the extra addons you might get.
AT our house we use curse client. Personally I don’t use a great amount of addons and find the curse client for updating works well for me. I’m old and a creature of habit:) Perhaps as I obtain more addons I’ll check that out. May be more beneficial to my hunter husband since he uses alot more addons.
Thanks:)
