Recently brought my younger brother into the game and he leveled up a prot pally (no, he didn’t level a pally and respec prot at 80, he leveled a prot speced pally for 80 levels) who dinged 80 just a few days before 3.3 and the new LFG tool droped, and I have been trying to beat this into his head for weeks now.

Need to write up a macro along the lines of:
    /tar focus
/w target “Yo moron, BTFU if you want some of that resto healing stuff”

    Wonder if it would work.

Then again, I’d say to the shammy healer, that don’t slam them totems before I’ve established aggro. Then you’d have enough time to plant them where they should be and I would have time to pull that mob to your healing range.

Correct in both ways and the issue goes both ways nevertheless. The loss in initial aggro and threat gen isn’t to be neglected in this scenario, really

than again, that warrior needs rage to tank

    AND

charge is 25yrds (30 with glyph) and our range is 40 so….

I happen to tank on a warrior alt, while my main is resto shammy, and honestly I never saw this as an issue – maybe because of my alt I kindof anticipate it

only once had the luck to heal a “specialist” in COT who used charge/intercept combo off the zombies, thus putting 60yrds between himself and my shammy on a regular basis

The picture is of course mainly directed at raid bosses, which can kill your tank with two melee hits. Aggro/rage should never be a problem for a tank facing a raid boss. Especially with hard hitting, new bosses, I don’t think 25 rage will make any real difference and I see lots of bears who love to charge, even if it drains their rage. This is a indicator for me, that tanks often love to charge, because it’s a “cool” move, not because of rage issues.

Just announce your pull in vent/TS, pull with HT/MD, walk toward the boss. Position the boss where you want him to stand while giving healers the time to find their own positions.

Charge is great because of the in-combat mobility it offers. As a tool for pulling raid bosses its a gimmick at best and will lead to unnecessary wipes form time to time.

Like everything, it’s up to communication. That presentation posed this to include all group content with tank and healing, so it’s no more a clear proof that even though one picture is more than thousand words, a lack of proper presentation leads to either not understanding or misinterpretation.

All group content needs co-operation and mutual understanding of the basic principles of how different classes work. There is need for better communication and understanding in all sides of the class war.

PS. I agree: it’s total lack of understanding from both the tank’s side as well as the rl’s side to let this kind of thing happen. As a non-raiding tank, I’ve seen it happen from the dps side, but also similar cases from the healing side in hc’s. Luckily hc’s are more lenient to slack.

This makes me laugh, because this is basically what happened when I tried to zip through the weekly raid yesterday. It was Sartharion. I just zipped from one group to the next, and after Tenebron the lone healer was too far behind. Four angry mobs whacking on me, good times. Yay for Lay on Hands from one of the ret pallies in the raid. :)

    - to the contrary, 25 rage right on the pull makes /all the difference in the world/ – especially on a raid boss where DPS will be opening up immediately. All it takes is one or two avoided attacks on both sides right at the pull to leave a tank rage starved and praying that the taunt button works at the one point in the entire fight where it actually matters – (i.e. right at the pull before they’ve been able to get a couple of nice solid Shield Slams in to build a threat lead).

I absolutely got pilloried by three of our 25-man’s healers after I charged in on Marrowgar one time. I never even noticed, but apparently there were two Nature’s Swiftness and one Lay on Hands in the space of about two seconds before the other tanks caught up. Oops!

I still prefer to Charge if possible (just, uh, not on Marrowgar) but will Bloodrage/Heroic Throw instead if the healers prefer.

I don’t have any problems with tanks charging away AS LONG AS I know they will do it. I can’t read minds. If you charge away while I am chatting with rest of the healers present in raid and you will pick up something hard hitting, the chances are you will die before any of the healers reach you (all engaged in chat).

Great example of boss is Onyxia – it’s okay to charge her with aware healers. Because if we still finetune assigments or chat about trying out something and you as a tank charge headlong into Nix, there is almost nothing we can do for you. You will mostly charge THROUGH the boss and turn her away, blocking our way with swiping tail, eating cleaves and breaths, that can mean quite painful death for you (and everyone else).

All in all, feel free to charge, but DO let the healers know you are about to. Before you run into charge range, there will already be HoTs on you, and we will be ready for the rush-in-dish-out healing.

Does anyone remember the longer corridor in Naxx’s Military Quarter just before you get to Gothik?

There’s a medium large pull at the end and every.single.week we had a tank die because he charged out of range while healers were still healing up stuff on the way :P

    • 2010 January 19

The best for us was the corridor that led into the cave through which you were coming to Grand Widow Faerlina. We had this excellent tank who charged into the cave to pick up the two big spiders – we are talking early Naxx25 with early gear – while others were still finishing the bunch of big, small and medium spiders FROM RANGE. He died a lot. I know our Holy Paladin got really good at anticipating this Tank’s passion for charge and spared him few repair bills, but still. Worst thing – it was always healers fault. Not him for going somewhere around corner down some slope avoiding any LoS with any friendly unit, but healers, still healing the current trash encounter.

Speaking as someone who has not yet healed a charging warbeast, but as someone who was a charging warbeast, this is a nono situation. Make sure let healers know that you’re going to charge. You don’t die, they don’t yell at you. win-win.

@drug: As a bear druid main, I actually agree with feist – most of the reason I end up charging to start boss fights is because if I don’t, the DPS will start going before I even get to make one attack – and then I have to hope growl doesn’t miss.

  15. 2010 January 29

I have to admit I love charge. Have since the day I got it at level…4? It is one of the funnest skills warriors have.

And I have charged out of range more than once. Always my fault.

Charging Ony and Marrowgar bad! I charged Ony once. Once.

Marrowgar–I will have to try that..when I have another warrior tanking with me and I believe he will be with me within a second or 2.
